What are the Urology Care Foundation Humanitarian Endowments?

To support our vision to be the leader in improving health care for urologic patients worldwide, the Urology Care Foundation has established a series of Humanitarian Endowments that will generate grants annually to support individuals who provide direct urologic patient care to underserved communities in the United States and around the globe.

What do these endowments fund?

An endowment is a forever fund. Only interest from the fund can be spent, not the principal anchoring the fund. Only up to five percent is spent on an annual basis, growing the original funds over time.

The funds from the Humanitarian Endowments support the Urology Care Foundation’s Humanitarian Grant Program, which supports urology-specific humanitarian missions carried out around the world.

What is the Need:

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), half the world lacks access to essential health services. Millions of people around the world suffer from urologic disease, impacting children and adults, males and females. Many countries, and even regions within the United States, lack the urologists to serve their patient populations. The gaps and disparities across racial, ethnic and socioeconomic communities worldwide are growing now more than ever. According to “Manpower Needs in Urology in the Twenty-First Century,” qualified and appropriately trained urologists are limited and sparsely distributed. The urological manpower need projection clearly indicates the major shortages in developing countries compared to the developed.

"To support what we do, to allow a person to have just the basic functions of life, and help with training others, to bring the best urologic care to patients...this describes the purpose that we have."

Arthur L. "Bud" Burnett, II, MD

Volunteer urologists are critical to serving these underserved populations, and currently treat thousands of patients each year.

In the United States, 20 percent of Americans live in rural areas, yet only nine percent of physicians practice there. Poverty is a potential health risk factor in any region, but is more prevalent in rural areas and is often related to increased chronic disease and uninsured individuals. Equitable access and availability of quality urologic care has a major impact on the quality of life and overall health outcomes worldwide.

Your Support Can Make a Global Impact!

Endowment gifts are the most lasting and powerful resources a donor can give. Because they provide a steady stream of income from permanently invested funds, endowment gifts keep growing and giving in perpetuity.

UCF Humanitarian Endowments generate grants to support individuals who provide direct urologic patient care to underserved communities in the United States and throughout the world.

Our goal is to fund eight additional endowments to recognize and support – for generations to come – the many urology-specific humanitarian missions carried out around the globe.

The Foundation is extremely thankful for the tremendous generosity of individuals and organizations who have established humanitarian endowments.
