  • Dr. Natasha Kyprianou, PhD
    1994 - 1995 Research Scholar
    2008 AUA Foundation Distinguished Mentor
    Dr. Kyprianou is the James F. Hardymon Chair of Urologic Research at the University of Kentucky Medical Center. She is also a Professor of Surgery/Urology, Professor of Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry, Professor of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine, and Professor of Toxicology.
  • Dr. Anthony Schaeffer
    Chairman and Herman L. Kretschmer Professor of Urology
    Northwestern University's Feinberg School of Medicine
    Dr. Schaeffer has made major contributions to urologic research and has re-invigorated interest in basic science research as a strong advocate of physician-scientists and their needs.
  • Dr. Larry Lipshultz, MD
    1975 - 1977 Research Scholar
    Dr. Lipshultz was the first Research Scholar in the AUA Foundations 35 year Research Scholars Program which was initiated in 1975. He holds several appointments including: Professor, Scott Department of Urology; the Lester and Sue Smith Chair in Reproductive Medicine.
  • Dr. Stephen Zderic, MD
    1989 – 1990 Research Scholar
    2010 AUA Foundation John W. Duckett Award for Excellence in Pediatric Research
    Dr. Stephen Zderic is the John W. Duckett Endowed Chair in Pediatric Urology and is a Professor of Urology at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine. Dr. Zderic received his B.S. from the University of California-Riverside and M.D. from UCLA.

Application Checklist

Letter of Intent
Letter of Intent – a letter of intent is highly recommended, but not required. The letter should be submitted to Rodney Cotten by fax or e-mail no later than August 5, 2011.

Application Package
A complete grant application will contain the following items in the stated order. Please be aware that any grant over 26 pages in length will not be reviewed and any grant using less than a 12-point font will not be reviewed. The 26-page limit includes all portions of the application with the exception of the Application Agreement Form; letters of support from individuals other than mentor(s); and the references.

Applications will only be accepted online at UrologyHealth.org beginning July 1st. Applicants must complete the online forms AND upload one complete PDF file document that includes all items. The deadline for submitting applications is 5:00 p.m. LOCAL time on Thursday, September 8, 2011.

Checklist for Applicant

    • *Other than choosing a one-year or two-year award, the applicant cannot designate the award for which they are applying (Segura, Dornier, AUA Section Award, ect.).

  • Description of research proposal in layman's terms
  • Research proposal (see Preparation of the Research Proposal)
  • Applicant's curriculum vitae or biosketch (follow NIH guidelines at http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/biosketchsample.doc; not to exceed four pages)
  • Notification of applications filed to other funding sources

Checklist for Mentor(s)

  • Institutional plans: This section should describe the institution's facilities, funding and technical assistance, specific duties of the Applicant, time committed to research, clinical activities, teaching duties, relationship to Mentor(s), ongoing research program and immediate supervisor (if other than Mentor)
  • Concise statement of reasons why the Applicant and Mentor should be selected, to include an indication of the Applicant's potential for an independent career in urologic research, and an estimated timeline for career development
  • Outline of clinical/research time (M.D. researchers only)
  • Mentors' letters of support for Applicant
  • All Mentors' biosketches (follow NIH guidelines at http://grants1.nih.gov/grants/funding/phs398/biosketchsample.doc; not to exceed four pages)
  • List of Mentors' previous fellows and their current positions (if there are none, please indicate such)
