Anthony Schaeffer, MD

Dr. Schaeffer has made major contributions to urologic research and has re-invigorated interest in basic science research as a strong advocate of physician-scientists and their needs. He has been NIH funded for over 30 years, having received the distinguished MERIT Award from the NIH/NIDDK from 1996-2004 and serving on the NIDDK Advisory Council from 2006-2010. He served on the AUA Research Council from 2000-2010, including as Council Chair from 2003-2010 and he is an Associate Editor for the Journal of Urology. He received the AUA's Eugene Fuller Triennial Prostate Award in 2004 and the AUA Distinguished Service Award in 2010. He has published extensively on urinary tract infection, inflammation and incontinence and he developed and has performed innovative techniques for incontinence in men and women, the most recent being the urethral sling procedure for post prostatectomy incontinence.
