Robert Cheeks

Advanced Prostate Cancer Patient

Robert Cheeks, is a 68-year-old male that was diagnosed in March 2015 with advanced prostate cancer. He has undergone a prostatectomy and hormone therapy to treat his cancer. Robert credits his positive attitude for keeping him motivated.

“What keeps my spirits up is that no good can come of getting down. Get up in the morning. Smile! Positive attitude, yes, does help with getting better. It goes right along with the medications,” Robert says.

Robert’s prostate cancer was found during a normal exam. “There was something suspicious during the exam and they ordered a biopsy which came back positive,” he says.

Fortunately for Robert, the journey from diagnosis to treatment was not long. He credits his care team for making that happen and for being supportive.

He says having those individuals really makes a difference in how he feels. In addition, Robert says his doctor’s approach to his diagnosis really helped him feel confident about the next steps. He appreciated his doctor taking the time to sit beside him and talk about his diagnosis and his treatment options. He didn’t sit across the room or on the other side of the desk. That simple gesture made such a difference, according to Robert.

The Foundation prides itself on creating tools to help foster these important relationships between patients and their healthcare providers. In our prostate cancer suite of materials we have developed shared decision tools and videos to help patients become active participants in their care decisions. In addition, we have also developed tools for our health care providers to ensure they have all the resources they need to establish these important doctor-patient relationships.

Becca Martin

Overactive Bladder (OAB) Patient

Becca Martin has been dealing with Overactive Bladder (OAB) much of her life. Becca, in her mid-40s, lives outside of Aberdeen, Washington. Before she was treated, Becca sometimes urinated 40 times a day—as often as every 20 minutes.

“My symptoms got worse to the point where I could not drive into work anymore without having to make sure I had enough time to stop somewhere,” she says. Whenever she drove into Tacoma or Seattle, she would have to add an hour or two to the trip to account for all the rest stops she had to make.

Her primary care doctor referred Becca to a urologist, who diagnosed her with OAB. For medical reasons, Becca didn’t have the option of taking OAB oral drugs so her doctor explained all of the other treatment options available to her. Becca chose a bladder pacemaker to treat her OAB condition.

Becca has had tremendous results. One day, soon after she had the surgery, she and her boss were amazed to realize it had been six hours since Becca had last gone to the bathroom—a far cry from the several times an hour she used to go. “I don’t have to worry about running to the restroom every 20 minutes,” she says.

Becca urges anyone with OAB symptoms to talk to their doctor about it right away. Together you can find out if you have OAB and what treatment is best for you. As Becca knows, treating OAB can change your life.

To help the millions of people diagnosed with OAB, the Foundation has developed an entire suite of materials on OAB, Stress Urinary Incontinence and general incontinence-related materials.  Studies have shown that many patients – especially those who are older or female – wait years before talking about their urinary symptoms with a healthcare provider. Our goal is to remove the stigma around incontinence and other urologic conditions and ensure everyone knows there is hope.

Research

We are proud of the contribution we have made to urologic research. Since 1975, the Foundation has supported more than 750 outstanding young scientists with nearly $30 million in research funding dedicated to preventing, diagnosing and treating urologic conditions. Research made possible by the Foundation has led to improvements in patient care such as preservation of fertility in male cancer patients, more effective treatment of kidney stones, and dietary interventions that improve prostate cancer outcomes.  And thanks to the critical funding provided in the early stages of their careers, over 80 percent of researchers supported by the Foundation remain committed to urologic research. We support every stage of research to improve the quality of life for patients suffering from urologic disease.

Through the many contributions we have made to support researchers at leading institutions throughout the country, we have made a lasting and deep contribution to the urologic research community.

Urology Care Foundation Researchers Receiving Funding in 2016

Your Support in Action in 2016

Thanks to our donors, we were able to make great strides in carrying out our mission in 2016.

We awarded nearly $2 million to support over 40 young scientists working on new advancements to help patients through research.

These awards do more than fund cutting-edge research—they provide gifted researchers with the necessary training to develop a career-long commitment to finding the next breakthrough in patient care.

This was also a seminal year for our patient advocacy initiatives. For the first time in the Foundation’s history, we dedicated full-time resources to patient advocacy.

In 2016, we:

  • Brought 30 patient advocacy organizations together to form the Bladder Health Alliance (BHA).
  • A Roundtable meeting was held at AUA headquarters which generated innovative ideas about collaborative tactics that promote activities and discussions about Bladder Health Month, celebrated throughout the month November.
  • Provided thousands of patients and caregivers with vital information on clinical trials in their area that may offer new opportunities and hope for better outcomes

Community Awareness Efforts

Highlights from Season 8:

  • Reached more than 100 million with our efforts to connect, educate and inspire men across the country to know their risk and talk to their doctor about whether prostate cancer testing is right for them
  • Conducted more than 125 interviews during two satellite/radio media tours, featuring KYS spokesperson and Pro Football Hall of Famer, Mike Haynes
  • Welcomed AUA members, Drs. Benjamin Lowentritt and Edward Schaeffer as guest speakers during Prostate Cancer Awareness month (September) and Super Bowl (radio row) interviews

The Bladder Health Alliance (BHA), led by the Urology Care Foundation, achieved a 2016 outreach priority of declaring each November as Bladder Health Month. This was the direct result of a successful grassroots advocacy effort led by the BHA to reduce the stigma surrounding bladder health conditions and promote the need for advanced awareness about the implications associated with them. Members of the Alliance directly mobilized patient advocates to contact their members of Congress and rally support for our advocacy efforts.

Ultimately, a House resolution and Senate measure passed unanimously supporting the designation of

The Foundation holds various events to raise funds and awareness of urologic conditions. One of the Foundation’s fundraising events in 2016 was called Rockin’ at the Tin Roof and it  kicked-off the AUA  Annual Meeting in San Diego. The event took place on Friday, May 6, 2016 at the Tin Roof venue in the Gaslamp District of San Diego. It was a resounding success, raising nearly $100,000 in support of the Foundation’s research and education programs. Attendees and supporters to the sold-out benefit included, NFL Hall-of-Famer and KYS spokesperson, Mike Haynes, Foundation supporters, AUA domestic and international members, residents, patient advocates and industry partners. The fun, casual evening featured musical entertainment from two popular urologists’ bands Sticks and Stones and The Void. The highlight of the evening was an impressive karaoke style sing-off challenge that left the crowd wanting more!

Financial Highlights of 2016*

Because of the low overhead and fundraising costs of the Foundation, we are proud of the fact that 87% of every dollar raised goes directly to support urologic research and education programs.

The Urology Care Foundation’s program expenses fall into two major categories:

Research Grants are awarded to institutions and individuals throughout the United States through the American Urological Association (AUA). The AUA has a stringent peer-review process that reflects the highest standards of the National Institutes of Health. Each year, the Foundation grants nearly $2 million in research funding through the AUA in support of training awards, salary stipends and fellowships to promising investigators. Our awards span the career spectrum of research—medical students, residents, post-doctoral and post-resident fellows and independent investigators.

Education and Outreach expenditures include our efforts to raise awareness of urologic health through national public health campaigns and publications. The Foundation’s online and print materials are based on information from the AUA’s Clinical Guidelines. Our patient-friendly educational tools are designed to promote communication between patients and their healthcare providers. We also publish Urology Health extra®, a quarterly, award-winning patient focused magazine.

How You Can Help: Opportunities for Giving

You can make a difference in the lives of those suffering from a urologic condition. Whether it is running in a race to raise awareness or donating money to support educational initiatives, every act matters, and your contribution can change lives for the better. Our mission is to improve patients’ lives through education and research. We can’t achieve our mission without the support of donors, like you, who believe in our cause. Our volunteers and donors are making a difference every day. We look forward to welcoming you to our family of partners in raising awareness and support for those suffering with a urologic condition.

I wanted to spark innovation in urologic research to help transform scientific advances more quickly into improved patients care. So I made a gift to the Urology Care Foundation to not only catalyze new research opportunities, but also to honor my physician, Dr. Harris Nagler, for his passion and commitment to advance research and patient care.”

Greg Kahlert, president of the Kahlert Foundation, understood the need for urologic research funding after his father passed away from bladder cancer in 2011. He wanted to continue his father’s commitment of giving back to the community and was inspired to give to the Urology Care Foundation after his father’s urologist, Dr. Ronald Tutrone, recommended donating to help find a cure for bladder cancer.

“Since bladder cancer is the fourth most common cancer in men, but significantly under-funded, and the Urology Care Foundation has an excellent reputation—this was an easy decision,” said Mr. Kahlert.

The generous donation from the Kahlert Foundation enabled the Urology Care Foundation to provide a one-year award to the Residency Research Award Program, which provides funding to a young urologist to conduct research under the direction of an accomplished mentor to improve patients’ lives. This year’s award recipient is conducting research around the use of an automated bladder cancer tracking program for veterans.

The Kahlert Foundation’s donation helps the Urology Care Foundation continue to advance urologic research to improve patients’ lives.

"The Urology Care Foundation Scholarship has been a unique opportunity that has supported my current research while helping solidify my future as a surgeon-scientist. Funding from the Urology Care Foundation has invigorated my research endeavors, directed my career path toward academic urology, and assisted me in developing research partnerships with colleagues at other institutions.”

Neal Rowe, MD received Urology Care Foundation funding in 2013 as a clinical fellow at the University of Western Ontario. Dr. Rowe’s research focuses on improving the success rates for kidney transplantations.

One of the major problems with kidney transplantation is the inherent damage done to the kidney during the procedure. Kidneys can be damaged by the lack of blood flow when the kidney is removed from the donor and by the challenge of restoring blood flow once the kidney is transplanted into a patient. To help prevent this kind of damage, Dr. Rowe devoted his Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award to studying the protective effects of hydrogen sulphide on kidney grafts.

Dr. Rowe became the first to report that the use of hydrogen sulphide helps improve the survival of the transplanted kidney, which will ultimately improve the quality and longevity of donor organs. This is especially important given the limited supply of healthy donor organs.

The Foundation and the National Football League (NFL) remain steadfast in their commitment to building public awareness around the risk, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. The Know Your Stats (KYS) campaign, in partnership with the NFL, celebrated its eighth season. The season began in August 2016 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio and concluded in Houston, Texas at Super Bowl 51 in February 2017.

November as Bladder Health Month. Bladder Health Month is now recognized on Healthfinder.gov as a national observance. The AUA and the Urology Care Foundation launched a formal campaign on November 1 that was supported by all 30 members of the Bladder Health Alliance who shared strong and compelling messages to educate stakeholders and encourage dialogue between patients and healthcare providers. Education materials and resource links were cross promoted by the Foundation and advocacy partners on social media platforms and newsletter publications to aid in the effort.

I wanted to make a gift to an organization that I felt connected to and that was conducting promising research and education in the battle against urologic diseases. A planned gift made sense for my financial portfolio and created a good return on investment and tax relief, which allowed me to make my gift to the Urology Care Foundation and support a worthy cause.”

2016

Annual Report

Urology Care Foundation

The Urology Care Foundation has established one of the most dynamic, physician-led patient education programs in medicine today. We pride ourselves on being the single largest repository for urologic patient education information that is medically approved and aligned with current clinical guidelines.

Our patient education materials are developed by our Patient Education Council, six Patient Education Committees and reviewed and approved for patient literacy and usability. We have more than 100 articles ranging from pediatric urologic conditions to male and female geriatric patients. In addition, we offer nearly 100 pieces of educational material that can be downloaded or ordered from our website for free. Our resources are the go-to place for patients and caregivers wanting to learn more about any urologic condition. They are also a key resource for our healthcare providers who want to ensure their patients have reliable, current and easy-to-read information to guide them along their healthcare journey.

  • Organized 106 patient advocates to promote the AUA’s grassroots action alert urging their representatives to support Bladder Health Month
  • Supported 48 meetings with patient advocacy organizations to identify ways to collaborate on legislative priorities
  • Participated in 5 patient sponsored fly-ins to promote awareness and funding for urologic health conditions

  • Distributed more than 250 patient education materials to fans during a New England Patriots fan event in Foxboro, Massachusetts, as well as in Houston, Texas prior to Super Bowl 51
  • Hosted a KYS Tweet Chat during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month, in which nearly 370 tweets were exchanged over a one hour period
  • Participated in the AUA Tweet-a-Thon during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month
  • Increased website traffic to KnowYourStats.org by nearly 80 percent during Prostate Cancer Awareness Month and the weeks leading up to Super Bowl 51

Ultimately, a House resolution and Senate measure passed unanimously supporting the designation of November as Bladder Health Month.

*A copy of the most recent audited financials is available by contacting the Urology Care Foundation. Documents submitted under the Maryland Charitable Solicitations Act are also available from the Maryland Secretary of State, State House, Annapolis, MD 21401 (410-974-5534).

The Urology Care Foundation offers a wide range of gift vehicles through which individuals, corporations and foundations can help support the Foundation. A number of these gift opportunities offer donors substantial tax benefits and include (but not limited to):

  • Direct donations made by cash, check/money order and credit card or direct bank wire transfer
  • Making a bequest by Will
  • Donating appreciated assets, including stocks and bonds
  • Giving a gift of life insurance, creating a charitable trust to benefit the Urology Care Foundation or making the Foundation the beneficiary of a qualified retirement plan

Simpa Salami, MD, MPH is the recipient of a one-year Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award dedicated to supporting a future leader in cancer research. Dr. Salami’s research will advance our understanding of early detection and treatment outcomes of prostate cancer.

Born and raised in Nigeria, Dr. Salami traveled to the U.S. to complete his clinical and research training at Hofstra University in New York and Harvard University in Massachusetts. Having won numerous awards and recognitions for his work, Dr. Salami is currently an oncology fellow at the University of Michigan. His yearlong research study will focus on improving our understanding of the progression of low to high grade prostate cancer in men on active surveillance.

This Urology Care Foundation Research Scholar Award (made possible by the Society for Urologic Oncology) will provide Dr. Salami with the critical support needed to launch his career in prostate cancer research and clinical practice. He anticipates taking a lead role in the improvement of urologic care delivery through research that seeks to improve, refine and innovate the way prostate cancer is detected and managed. Dr. Salami is excited about his future of becoming a surgeon-scientist in an academic institution, engaging in cutting-edge research and continuing to train the next generation of urology researchers.

Dr. Rowe recently accepted a position at Dalhousie University in Nova Scotia as an Assistant Professor of Urology. This appointment will enable him to develop his own research program while allowing him to train medical students and residents in research.

Dr. Rowe’s Urology Care Foundation Award was made possible by the Frank and Marion Hinman Urology Research Fund.

Following the completion of his project, Dr. Rowe wrote, “The Urology Care Foundation Scholarship has been a unique opportunity that has supported my current research while helping solidify my future as a surgeon-scientist. Funding from the Urology Care Foundation has invigorated my research endeavors, directed my career path toward academic urology, and assisted me in developing research partnerships with colleagues at other institutions.”

Research

Kathleen Kobashi, MD and Becca Martin

Community Awareness Efforts

The Foundation and the National Football League (NFL) remain steadfast in their commitment to building public awareness around the risk, diagnosis and treatment of prostate cancer. The Know Your Stats (KYS) campaign, in partnership with the NFL, celebrated its eighth season. The season began in August 2016 at the Pro Football Hall of Fame in Canton, Ohio and concluded in Houston, Texas at Super Bowl 51 in February 2017.

Ultimately, a House resolution and Senate measure passed unanimously supporting the designation of November as Bladder Health Month. Education materials and resource links were cross promoted by the Foundation and advocacy partners on social media platforms and newsletter publications to aid in the effort.

impact on americans

Highlights
of 2016
