Bedwetting in Children: Planning for Summer Camps and Vacations

Posted on: 15 Jul 2022

Kids running outside.

Summer is a time for kids to get out and have some fun! Whether your child is going to a daytime summer camp, overnight summer camp or the whole family is taking a vacation, you’ll want your kids to have the best time! There is a lot to prepare for these types of trips. Bags need to be packed with all the key items your kids will need during the day and night. One thing that may seem tricky to pack or plan for is what to do if your child has trouble with wetting the bed. This can surely make it hard for you or your child to fully enjoy a trip. But don’t worry! There are things you can do to help prepare you and your child so you can both enjoy your summer!

Let’s start with some basics. Bedwetting, or nocturnal enuresis, is when children pass urine without control while they sleep. While there are many causes of bedwetting, talking to your child’s doctor can help you come up with a plan that works best for your family.

In planning for your trip, there are a few things that may help. Try to limit your child’s fluid intake to drink less than 1-2 hours before bed. Try to get them to pass urine every 2-3 hours while awake. This may mean planning regular stops if going on a long car ride. If your child is going to a summer camp, talk to the camp counselors about your plan and how they can support your child.

It may be helpful to pack extra supplies such as multiple changes of underwear and clothes, mattress protectors, extra sheets or even disposable products like pull-ups if you decide that is best for your child.

At the end of the day, we all want our kids to enjoy their summer. The below resources can help you learn more about bedwetting in children and help you plan for you and your family to have an exciting summer!
