There is no question that there is not a large amount of history when it comes to female sexual health. So ladies, let’s talk about sex, because female sexual health matters.

Here’s just a snapshot of what we know from history. Imagine you’re a woman in 100 CE and you come down with a problem that no male doctor can seem to figure out. Their solution? Blame it on the uterus. Because there did not seem to be any other reason for a woman’s very real symptoms of insomnia, anxiety, muscle spasms and loss of sex drive. These symptoms were a lot of the times linked to hysteria. The term “wandering womb” was even used, to which a woman might be offered enemas of sweet-smelling herbs to move the womb back down into place. Pretty wild, right?

Female sexual health has come a long way since then, but there is still a lot that needs to be addressed. What if you’re menopausal or just not interested or sex is painful? What if orgasm is a rare pleasure? We do know more today, and urologists in sexual medicine can help.

Vaginas are complicated. There’s the clitoris, vestibular bulbs, labia minora, and urethra, just to name a few anatomical features. A lot of women don’t even know how their vaginas really work, so how can we expect anyone else to know too?

Research on women’s health and female sexual dysfunction has historically been severely neglected by the medical community. The good news is that science is finally starting to focus on research and treatment options which may help to have a positive impact on the sexual health of women.
